Ear Keloid Treatment

Ear keloid: why it is difficult, and which method was published

Ear Keloid

Keloid is a condition that occurs due to excessive tissue production during the healing process of skin wounds, causing raised scar tissue on the skin’s surface. When it occurs in specific areas like the ear, it can negatively affect individuals both aesthetically and psychologically. Ear keloids often arise after traumas such as ear piercing, and their treatment has long been considered a challenging process in the medical field.

Common Methods and Challenges in Ear Keloid Treatment

Keloid treatment remains a debated topic worldwide. In some countries, the combination of excision (surgical removal) and radiation is commonly used as a treatment option. However, radiation is not always accessible, and it can sometimes have rare side effects. Therefore, the need for safer and more effective treatment alternatives persists.

Scientific and Safe Treatment Approach for Ear Keloids

At Göztepe Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital I use a published approach for ear keloids: enucleation and fat grafting. The aim is to reduce recurrence while preserving shape. Results vary.

We had the opportunity to share our experience in keloid treatment with our colleagues at Tokyo University in Japan and to discuss it on an international level. Tokyo University is a significant center with extensive experience in this field, as keloid cases are quite common in Japan, and keloid treatments are frequently performed there.

Our treatment protocol is also supported by our scientific study published in a prestigious medical journal in the field of Plastic Surgery. You can access detailed information in the following article: A Novel Method for Patients With Ear Keloid: Enucleation and Fat Grafting.
